Barnyard Pal Pop Tarts

Pop tarts are one of the kids favorite snacks. We USED to buy them from the store, you know the ones with all the gunk in them. Then, we started buying the organic version and eventually couldn't afford to do that anymore with growing kids, so now we make our own and it is sooo easy! It's fun too because you get to "play" and make them what ever flavor, shape, and size!

These didn't take more than an extra 5 minutes to make. Purchase your pie crust of choice, or make your favorite pie crust recipe. Roll out your dough to at least an 1/8 of an inch thick, and cut out circles. Brush some milk (I used soy) around the edge of the bottom circle.

Add a teaspoon of jelly or jam to the center of the bottom circle. We used homemade current jelly. Place the top circle over the bottom one. Seal the two pieces together by taking a fork and pressing down along the edges of the circle.

With your remaining dough cut out simple shapes to create your barnyard pals! Brush the top of your pop tart with milk before placing on the "parts" for their faces.
We made a pig, cow, chicken, and sheep. I lightly brushed some milk over the top of each animal so it turns a nice golden brown when it's finished baking. You could sprinkle sugar on top too if you wanted.

I baked mine at 375 degrees F for about 15 minutes. The thicker your pop tarts are the longer they will have to bake. So baking time is approximate. Golden brown is a good indication they're finished.

These are great for breakfast or a snack any time of the day! Enjoy!
