Summer "School"

We have finished "school" for the year, but we have not finished learning! I recently wrote a post called "Unschooling Myself", which you can read here, or over at Savannah's blog Hammock Tracks where I am her guest contributor on June 3rd, for her Hammock Tracks Weekend Edition.

Summer school is a horrible combination of words. Summer and school, a kids worst nightmare! Well, it doesn't have to be! ;) Summer, for me is a great opportunity to teach myself to relax, look around for natural ways to teach the kids, and to let go of traditional schooling.

I love this time of year because I learn so much! I learn about my kids' passions and interests, what I would like to do, or not do in the following school year, and to train myself to let life teach.

Opportunities are all around........

Animal care,

Botany,

Insects, photography,

Weather, clouds, atmosphere etc.,

Pirates, history, costume making, and of course reading!

There really is no end to summertime learning. It's a bare foot racing, tree climbing, under the apple tree reading kind of education! Every year I incorporate more of our "summertime" learning style into the rest of the year. It really makes homeschooling a lot of fun. It gets the kids involved in making choices by choosing a subject that inspires them and running with it.

"And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up." Deuteronomy 11:19

This has been my 'go to' verse lately. I have been asking the Lord to teach me how I need to be teaching my children. Who would know better than the Creator! This verse shows me that teaching (and learning) happens all the time, throughout the day, inside and outside, but most importantly we are daily learning together. Side by side, every step of the way.........................(until they're ready to leave the nest...sniff, sniff...)

I hope you will follow us through the summer and keep an eye out for some very unschooling type of projects!
